Energy Prices Complicate BoE Rate Outlook
Bank of England policymakers are increasingly divided over how to respond to the energy shock. Governor Andrew Bailey said energy prices have already risen and could climb further, with pressure coming not only from external developments but also refining capacity and processing costs. Persistent energy pressures could keep UK inflation elevated and complicate the BoEs assessment of the price outlook.
Megan Greene favors earlier action. Having supported a 25bp rate hike in July, she is concerned that prolonged high energy prices could feed into wages and broader inflation. Deputy Governor Dave Ramsden remains more cautious, citing weaker-than-expected wage growth and supporting a hold at 3.75% at the previous meeting. FXT believes the BoE debate now centers on whether pre-emptive tightening is needed, with the pass-through of energy costs to domestic inflation likely to be a key factor in future rate decisions.

Finlands Import Growth Outpaces Exports
Finlands trade balance shifted from a EUR 1.3bn surplus a year earlier to a EUR 735m deficit in July. Exports rose 13.8% y/y, while imports increased 15.7%. Pharmaceutical exports surged 240% and copper exports climbed 84%, providing notable support to overall exports.
Exports to EU countries increased 3.8%, while shipments to non-EU markets fell 27.2%, highlighting a clear divergence in external demand. FXT believes the trade deficit mainly reflects stronger import growth and weaker non-EU demand, with future trade performance depending heavily on whether external demand recovers.

South Koreas Labor Market Remains Resilient
South Koreas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 2.8% to 2.7% in August, while employment increased by 184,000 for a third consecutive month to 29.15 million. The number of unemployed declined by 4,000 y/y to 588,000, indicating continued labor-market resilience.
Job gains were concentrated in services, with health and social welfare adding 186,000 positions, arts, sports and recreation 73,000, and business facilities management and support services 45,000. Manufacturing lost 38,000 jobs, agriculture, forestry and fishing 109,000, and education 24,000. The economically inactive population rose by 77,000 to 16.3 million, while the youth employment rate fell one percentage point to 44.1%. FXT believes the labor market continues to improve, though weakness in manufacturing and youth employment remains a concern.

Australian Business Conditions Turn Negative
Australias NAB Business Conditions Index fell from 4 to -1 in August, turning negative for the first time in six years and reaching its lowest level since August 2020. Business confidence also declined from -6 to -8, while conditions worsened across six of the eight industries surveyed.
The profitability index plunged from 1 to -9, while trading conditions fell from 9 to 4. Product price growth slowed to 0.8%, while purchase costs still rose 2.3%, further squeezing margins. Employment edged down from 4 to 3, forward orders improved from -3 to 0, and capacity utilization slipped from 83.1% to 82.5%. FXT believes the deterioration is currently concentrated in profitability, while employment remains relatively stable, although persistent cost pressures could gradually weigh on hiring and investment.
