The Yen extended its recent rally on Tuesday, moving closer to its strongest level of the year as traders increased expectations for a Bank of Japan rate hike next week. The currency strengthened as much as 1% to 152.89 per Dollar after rising 1.2% on Monday, while a break below 155 triggered stop-loss orders and put the 152 area firmly in focus.
The Yen‘s advance was supported by expectations for further BoJ tightening, while speculation that Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund could increase allocations to domestic assets added to the currencys momentum. The rally, initially sparked by intervention efforts from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, has continued to gain strength.
Japan‘s Finance Minister Katayama said the government’s stance on currencies remains unchanged following joint intervention with US counterparts and that authorities will continue working to maintain orderly markets. Japans economy grew faster than initially estimated in the second quarter, while nominal wages rose at their fastest pace in nearly three decades in July, supported by strong corporate earnings and a tight labor market. The data strengthened the case for a BoJ rate hike at its September 18 meeting.
Japanese workers‘ wage growth is also expected to keep the Bank of Japan on course for further monetary tightening. Meanwhile, Australia’s consumer confidence slumped back toward deeply pessimistic territory in September, with households concerned about the possibility of the Reserve Bank resuming interest-rate increases and the impact of higher fuel costs.
Asian equities continued to advance, supported by gains among South Korean chipmakers. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose 0.3%, led by SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, while South Koreas Kospi gained 2.4%. Nasdaq 100 futures also rose 0.6%.
Oil remained near $100 a barrel as traders monitored details of an Iranian agreement with Oman to manage shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude climbed 0.5% to $97.46 a barrel, while strong Chinese buying further tightened the oil market.
A liquefied natural gas tanker that loaded in Qatar early last month has also sailed through the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first visible exit of Qatari LNG through the waterway since July.
In broader markets, the Dollar Index declined 0.1%, while the 10-year Treasury yield fell one basis point to 4.77%. Gold gained 0.6% to $4,433 an ounce as the weaker Dollar supported demand for bullion.
Copper reached a record $14,617 a ton for a second consecutive session, driven by expectations of tighter near-term supplies and potential US tariffs on refined metal.
Markets will now turn their attention to US economic data as the main catalyst for the week. Earnings from Oracle and Adobe on Thursday will also provide further insight into AI infrastructure spending and the technology sectors impact on software companies.
FISG Daily Market Wrap provides a concise view of the forces moving global markets, helping investors stay informed and better prepared for what comes next.
